Manchester United could earn a bonus of £100m if they defeat Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday but will lose the funds almost immediately.
Manchester United at the brink of financial breakdown
Ruben Amorim’s men are looking to end the season in style on Wednesday —by beating Spurs to win the Europa League and secure a place in next season’s Champions League — after a dismissal performance through the 2024/25 campaign. Such a situation would earn the winning team a bonus of £100m (€118m/$133m) but United would have to “kiss it goodbye” almost immediately, according to the Daily Mail.
United are currently on course to lose £100m, meaning any Europa League jackpot will vanish straightaway. According to Wall Street analysts’ forecast, Manchester United will announce a third-quarter loss of £40m shortly and estimate their current debts sit at an eye-watering £1bn.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously claimed Manchester United could have “gone by bust by Christmas,” although those comments have been described as “very disingenuous” by football finance expert Kieran Maguire.
An abysmal 2024/25 campaign for both teams
Wednesday’s Europa League final has been billed as a game that neither Manchester United nor Tottenham can afford to lose. Both teams have endured disastrous Premier League seasons with Manchester United winning just 10 matches out of 37 games and currently sit 16th on the table. Ange Postecoglou’s men have also won just 11 matches, losing 21 and are just one place above relegation zone. Both teams know that victory will provide a trophy and a lucrative place in the 2025-26 Champions League.
What Ruben Amorim said
“Maybe people will look at our team in a different way because winning a European title is really important. It would help us to finish the season in a good note. But nothing is going to change our season. Players know it, the staff knows, the fans know, everybody knows,” Amorim told a press conference.

“Winning a European title can help us to have that feeling that can help us to build for the future, but that’s it. I don’t think we are playing for more than winning the title” he said as he stresses the need for extensive improvements throughout the club, including its recruitment and academy system.
The Europa League final is being held at Athletic Club’s stomping ground – and the all-English final is a chance for both teams to win silverware despite having terrible domestic campaigns.
