Barcelona tie Jules Kounde to new long-term contract

Versatile French defender Jules Kounde has penned a new five-year contract at Barcelona, committing his future to the La Liga champions until the summer of 2030 and ending speculation linking him with a potential move away from Catalonia.

Kounde had earlier voiced his intention to finalize a new contract during Barcelona’s preseason tour this summer. Despite reported interest from Manchester City, the France international stayed committed to ensuring his long-term future with the Catalan club.

Barcelona announced Kounde’s contract extension last week, but it was officially finalized on Thursday afternoon when the Frenchman signed the documents at Camp Nou. Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco were present to mark the occasion.

Addressing assembled reporters moments after inking his new deal, the former Sevilla star revealed that the negotiation process was a “pretty straightforward” one as all parties involved were aligned towards the same goal.

“I’m very happy to renew,” Kounde said. “It was pretty straightforward. Both the club and I wanted the same thing.

“The sky’s the limit. We’re lucky to fight for all the trophies every season. Hopefully this year we’ll be even more successful than the last.

Barcelona cruised to a historic domestic treble in Hansi Flick’s first season, winning La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, with Kounde playing a key role in all three. The 26-year-old featured in 53 games and scored the Copa del Rey final winner in extra time.

As Barca aim to defend their domestic titles and chase Champions League success, Kounde’s consistency and current status as Spain’s best right-back will be vital to their ambitions. The Blaugrana have already kicked off their season with a 3–0 victory over Mallorca. They are back in action against Levante on Saturday, August 23.
