Diego Simeone has urged patience with Atletico Madrid after their sluggish start to the season, stressing that the club is in the process of “building a new team.”
Simeone’s Atleti sit 12th in La Liga with six points from five matches, following a 1-1 draw against Mallorca on Sunday. Conor Gallagher put the visitors ahead in the 79th minute, shortly after Alexander Sorloth was sent off, but Vedat Muriqi struck back six minutes later to earn a share of the spoils.
Atletico also squandered chances, with Julian Alvarez missing a first-half penalty. Simeone admitted his team must become more clinical in front of goal but pointed to the need for cohesion, with four of this summer’s signings featuring against Mallorca.
“We are trying to build a new team,” said the Argentine manager.
“Many players have come and we are working on that work. We are on the road and hoping that efficiency and forcefulness will bring us closer to the results that we are not having.
“On the coach’s side we have to look at the positive side and correct what we have to correct.
“We have to improve the defensive part. The team has started scoring in every game but we have to improve to sustain the games.”
Atletico Madrid have managed just one win from their first five La Liga games of the season, picking up three draws and suffering one defeat as well.
Real Madrid’s perfect start and Barcelona’s unbeaten run of four wins and a draw have already left Los Colchoneros nine points adrift, despite expectations that they would challenge both clubs at the top of La Liga.
Simeone’s men have to start grinding out much more positive results really soon or they may just find themselves embroiled in an unbefitting mid-table scrap for the rest of the season.
