Alonso tempers expectations despite Real Madrid’s perfect LaLiga start

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has tried to downplay his side’s perfect start to the season, insisting that Los Blancos are currently in a “building” phase.

Alonso’s men have been faultless so far this season after recording six consecutive victories in La Liga, dispatching the likes of Osasuna, Real Oviedo, Mallorca, Real Sociedad, Espanyol and Levante.

Los Blancos also began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille at the Santiago Bernabeu last week.

Courtesy of their perfect start, Real Madrid currently sit atop the La Liga table and are already considered favourites to usurp Barcelona’s throne.

Alonso also has a chance to match the all-time record for the greatest ever start by a Los Blancos manager set by Vanderlei Luxemburgo in 2005.

However, the Spanish tactician claims his sole focus is to develop Real Madrid into a team that can compete on all fronts once again.

“We’re very much in a growing phase, we’re still building,” he said. “We’ve been together for 51 days and there is a long way to go yet. We’re building a solid base to be competitive in La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa [del Rey].

“They [the players] all feel connected and an important part of the team. There is still room for improvement but we’re on the right track—not only with the results but also how we’re doing things. We can’t stop, this is just the beginning and we want to keep competing well.

“Having quality players makes everything easier, and it doesn’t take much training for them to understand our ideas and what we’re looking for. They’re flexible, they’re not tied to playing in one specific way, they can do all kinds of things and even play different positions.”
