Arteta backs Gyokeres amid goalscoring drought for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is confident in the ability of Victor Gyokeres and believes the striker will deliver goals for the club.

Gyokeres, 27, has had a rocky start to his Arsenal career and has not found the back of the net in his last five appearances.

The Sweden forward completed a £64 million move to the Gunners from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the summer, after impressive goalscoring feats which saw him win the Gerd Muller award at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

The 27-year-old has netted three times so far this season, but played a crucial role in Arsenal’s opener against Olympiacos on Wednesday night, with his shot bouncing off the post for Gabriel Martinelli to open the scoring.

“What I sense is that he’s doing better and better things every game”, Arteta said after the match.

“He was denied a few times with blocks, and then he hit the post, but I think overall his performance was exceptional.

“Again, his work was really good, and yeah, we want him to be scoring goals, but if he doesn’t do that, at least to do everything as he’s doing for the team, because he’s helping the team a lot”, he continued.

“I don’t know, but hopefully, yes, and hopefully it will be on Saturday [goals for Gyökeres].”

Arsenal eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Greek side Olympiacos in their second UCL game of the season on Wednesday night.

Martinelli netted the opener in the 12th minute, but the Gunners were made to wait for a second, which arrived in stoppage-time.

Substitute Bukayo Saka, who is close to a contract renewal that will see him become the highest paid player in the club’s history, found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal turn their attention to the English Premier League, where they battle West Ham United on Saturday.
