Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has responded calmly to his omission from the final shortlist for the Goalkeeper of the Year award at the 2024 CAF Awards.
Despite a standout performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, where he kept four clean sheets and played a heroic role in the semi-final penalty shootout against South Africa, Nwabali did not make the final three-man shortlist.
The CAF announcement on Thursday night revealed that Manchester United’s first goalkeeper, Andre Onana, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Yahia Fofana will compete for the prize, set to be awarded on December 16.
Reacting to the snub, Nwabali kept his response short and resilient, writing “We move” on his social media page. The phrase, often used to signify determination to move forward despite setbacks, reflects the goalkeeper’s positive mindset as he looks ahead to future challenges.
While many fans expressed disappointment over his exclusion, Nwabali’s performances at the AFCON have undoubtedly cemented his place as one of Africa’s rising goalkeeping talents.
Williams is considered the favourite to win the award after claiming the Best Goalkeeper title at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and making history as the first home-based African goalkeeper to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
