Flamingos set up fierce final showdown with Ghana at WAFU U17 girls’ cup

The stage is set for a high-stakes rivalry as Nigeria’s Flamingos prepare to face hosts Ghana in the final of the inaugural WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup on Sunday.

The much-anticipated clash will take place at the Ghana Centre of Excellence in Prampram, the same venue where the Flamingos secured their spot with a commanding 2-0 victory over Benin Republic in the semi-finals.

Thursday’s semi-final saw the Flamingos dominate their West African neighbours, breaking the deadlock in the 70th minute. Mary Lucky Mkpa calmly converted a penalty after Janet Akekoromowei missed an earlier opportunity to put Nigeria ahead. Eight minutes later, Peace Effiong doubled the advantage, capitalising on a goalkeeping error to seal the win.

Despite Akekoromowei having a late goal disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper, the Flamingos’ clinical performance reflected their impressive tournament form.

The team has scored 14 goals in three matches while conceding only two, a statistic that underscores their attacking prowess and defensive solidity.

Ghana, however, will pose a significant challenge, having dismantled Côte d’Ivoire 5-0 in their own semi-final. The hosts will be buoyed by home support and a fierce rivalry with Nigeria that adds another layer of intensity to Sunday’s showdown.

The match comes on a symbolic day as Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles will also take on Ghana’s Black Galaxies in the first leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers in Accra, setting the stage for an intriguing doubleheader of Nigerian-Ghanaian football battles.

With the Flamingos aiming to crown their strong campaign with silverware, Sunday’s final promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of Africa’s brightest young teams.
