Brighton’s Hurzeler impressed with ‘confidence-boosting’ victory over Ipswich Town

Brighton and Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler, was impressed with the team’s performance as they ended an eight-game winless run in the league, with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Ipswich Town.

The Seagulls had not tasted victory in the league since a 2-1 triumph over Bournemouth in late November, and closed out a superb win at Portman Road on Thursday.

Kaoru Mitoma’s shot beat Ipswich goalkeeper Walton, who should have saved, to give Brighton the lead in the second half, before substitute Georginio Rutter doubled their advantage with a clever flick from a set-piece, given after a VAR review.

“Overall we controlled the game, we defended quite well. Especially in the second half we managed to get more chances. We stayed in our structure and played more vertical in the second half and felt we deserved the win”, Hurzeler said.

“The game always opens when you score a goal because the opponents have to react, defend higher, press higher and gives us more space in behind – we were able to use that.”

There was a major moment of controversy in the match when Brighton forward Joao Pedro, was given a yellow card for an off-the-ball challenge on Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton.

“For me it’s very important that we focus on and trust the process. We had better performances in the last eight games and we didn’t win the games. Today, we played okay, we were solid but it was not the best performance from us.

This win should give us self-confidence and the belief back”, he added.

The win moved the Seagulls up to ninth on the standings, ahead of a trip to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Manchester United.
