Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expects more from his side after their title aspirations suffered a huge dent in their embarrassing 1-0 home loss to West Ham United.
The Gunners came into the match on Saturday knowing that a win would reduce the deficit to league leaders Liverpool, who had dropped points in the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa in midweek, to five points.
“No, no and I refuse that completely because I am talking about the standards of the players and the team that we played today, me included.
And that was nowhere near the levels that we have to hit to have the opportunity to win a Premier League. Today, no. We were very consistent, yes, but football is about what you do today and today, nowhere near”, Arteta expressed his frustration after the match.
Jarrod Bowen’s first half header was enough to secure the win for the Hammers over the Gunners, who were without their first-choice attacking options and had young defender Miles Lewis-Skelly, sent off for after a VAR review for a foul.
“We have to be [angry]. I hope we are very much because we didn’t hit the levels today, and I am very much responsible of that, so I am very, very angry”, he continued.
“It’s not in our hands. For me, I’m really, really annoyed about the things that are in our hands, and we didn’t do as well as we possibly could and that’s the performance and the result today.”
