Former Barcelona midfielder Arthur Melo stated that Real Madrid are currently the best team in the world after featuring in Girona’s 2-0 defeat to the reigning La Liga champions on Sunday.
Arthur, who previously spent two seasons with Real Madrid arch rivals Barcelona, is currently on loan from Serie A giants Juventus. He was making only his second appearance for Girona since arriving in the January transfer window.
The Brazilian midfielder logged 34 minutes in the game, coming on as a substitute in place of former Manchester United star Donny van de Beek.
Real Madrid skipper Luka Modric opened the scoring with a sensational goal with less than five minutes of first half football to play. Vinicius Junior then put the game to bed in the 83rd minute with a superb effort of his own.
Despite being on the wrong end of results, Arthur was immensely impressed by Real’s performance at the Santiago Bernabeu as Los Blancos established complete dominance in the game, from start to finish.
“Every game we play we try to do our best and we always want to win. But you’re playing against Madrid at the Bernabeu, for me the best team in the world and with a lot of confidence.
“Although playing against whoever we are going to look for the victory with a lot of respect,” he said as quoted by SPORT.
Arthur also acknowledged the brilliance of Modric’s goal, emphasizing that some moments in football are simply indefensible. Impressed by the execution, the Girona player openly praised the Croatian’s excellence after the match.
“It was a brilliant play. There’s nothing you can do; no tactic can defend against that. I congratulated him after the game for scoring such a spectacular goal. It was a high-quality display.”
