Real Madrid skipper Luka Modric has revealed that he plans to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu beyond this summer and probably even finish his playing career in the Spanish capital despite rumours of a potential exit.
The 39-year-old central midfielder remains a key part of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid squad despite seeing his role in the team steadily reduced. So far this season, he has made 44 appearances across all competitions but he has managed just 17 starts in both the La Liga and Champions League combined.
Ancelotti is now placing more of his trust in Los Blancos’ youthful and highly talented midfield generals including Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Modric’s reduced role has fueled speculations of a summer exit but the Croatian maestro has poured cold water on such rumours, insisting during a recent interview with Telefoot that he dreams of retiring from professional football as a Real Madrid player.
“Right now, I’m not thinking about retirement,” the 39-year-old midfielder explained.
“But as I’ve always said, I would like to retire at Real Madrid, that would be a dream for me. We’ll see what happens.
“There’s still a lot of the season left, and I want to focus on what’s left, because there are a lot of games still to play. I’m in no rush to make a decision.”
The 2018 FIFA World Cup finalist signed a one-year extension with Real Madrid last summer and as relayed by popular transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Modric intends to commit to another 12 months at the Santiago Bernabeu.
