Bayern Munich’s director of sports Max Eberl, has confirmed that Canada international Alphonso Davies is set to be sidelined for several months after suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear in his right knee.
The 24-year-old was substituted in the 12th minute, during his 58th appearance for the North American side, as they secured a 2-1 win over the United States in Sunday’s Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff match.
Canada head coach Jesse March had on Monday, suggested that the leftback should be back in action within a short period of time.
“I think he’ll be OK”, he said.
“There’s talk of him getting an MRI but I do think he was a little bit spooked because it was his knee and it moved in a certain way. Phonzy was even a morning (fitness) call because he was nursing a little bit of an injury and we weren’t sure.”
However, the Bundesliga side in a statement on Wednesday, revealed the extent of Davies injury.
“Unfortunately, during international breaks there’s always the risk that players will return injured – this time it’s hit us particularly hard”, Max Eberl said while also confirming that France defender Dayot Upamecano will also be out of action for a while.
“The absences of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are a heavy blow for Bayern.”
“Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences. We’ll now work even closer together. We have the quality to continue pursuing our big goals”, he added.
Davies joined Bayern Munich as a 17-year old in 2018 from Vancouver Whitecaps and signed a five-year extension in February after months of negotiation, with reports earlier linking him to European champions Real Madrid and English side Manchester United.
This season, he has been a key part of Vincent Kompany’s side as they look to reclaim the league title which they lost to Bayer Leverkusen last season, making six goal contributions in 33 appearances in all competitions.
Bayern Munich’s medical team has ruled him out for the season, dealing a huge blow to The Bavarians ahead of Saturday’s match against St. Pauli and next month’s UEFA Champions League quarterfinals clash with Inter Milan.
