Manchester City captain Kevin De Bruyne has announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.
The Belgian star in a shock statement released on social media, announced his intent to leave the Premier League champions when his contract expires in the summer.
De Bruyne joined City from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2015 for £54.5 million and has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell in his time at the Etihad.
In a statement released to the club fans on X, the 33-year old said: “Dear Manchester, Seeing this, you probably realise where this is heading. So I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player.
Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here- and you deserve to hear it from me first.
Football led me to all of you-and to this city”, the playmaker said.
“Chasing my dream, not knowing this period would change my life. This city. This club. These people… gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what we won EVERYTHING.”
The Belgian midfielder is arguably regarded as Manchester City’s greatest player, winning six Premier League titles, five League cups, two FA cups, one UEFA Champions League title and was part of the treble-winning team in 2020/21.
“Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye. Suri, Rome, Mason, Michèle, and I are beyond grateful for what this place has meant to our family. ‘Manchester’ will forever be on our kids’ passports- and more importantly, in each of our hearts. This will always be our HOME”, he continued.
“We cannot thank the city, club, staff, teammates, friends, and family enough for this 10-year ride. Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter. Let’s enjoy these last moments together! Much love, KDB.”
The former Chelsea midfielder is second on the all-time EPL assist chart with 118, only behind Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs who has 162, while also tallying 70 goals.
De Bruyne whose recent years has been hampered by injuries, has been previously linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and it remains to be seen where he is headed for the next chapter in his career.
