Postecoglou laments bad luck in Spurs’ Europa League draw

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has expressed frustration at his team’s luck in front of goal, after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

The German side took an early lead through Hugo Ekitike before Spurs leveled soon afterwards with a brilliant finish from right-back Pedro Porro, to keep the game balanced in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal encounter.

Spurs had several chances to kill off the game but a combination of poor finishing and brilliant saves from Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos, prevented the North London side from a win.

Speaking after the match, Postecoglou was disappointed with the result of the game after a spirited performance, making a joke that his side had fallen out of favor with the ‘football gods’ in recent matches.

He said: “I’m resigned to the fact that the football gods have got their eyes elsewhere this year. They’re obviously busy with other clubs and other managers so whatever we get, we’re going to have to do it without them this year.

Spurs have endured a hugely disappointing campaign blighted by injuries, and they currently occupy the 14th position on the English Premier League standings with seven games remaining.

Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentacur both hit the frame of the goal in the second half, before Santos denied Spurs defender Micky Van de Ven in stoppage time.

“The front three were working with Madders [James Maddison] and were really creative. You can’t ask any more from the lads than what the lads did, especially in that second half to create that many chances”, Ange Postecoglou added.

“We don’t get the win but I can’t ask [for] any more from the players.”

Tottenham Hotspur only remaining chance of a silverware is the Europa League and they head into next Thursday’s second leg in Germany with hopes of making it to the next round.

However, they have to navigate a tricky trip to the Midlands to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Sunday.
