Napoli head coach Antonio Conte has revealed that his side’s main goal for the current campaign is to secure a UEFA Champions League spot ahead of next season despite being in a tight race with Inter Milan for the Serie A title.
The Partenopei currently trail Inter by just three points at the summit of the Serie A table with only six games to go this season. They head into their matchday 33 game against Monza looking to secure a first away win in five attempts after drawing their last four and suffering one defeat.
Despite his side remaining firmly in the mix for potential Scudetto glory, Conte emphasized that the Partenopei’s main focus is still the same as at the start of the season, which is to qualify for the Champions League.
“First of all, we have to earn a place in the Champions League. Beyond everything else, we will have the opportunity to get closer to a prestigious goal that could not be foreseen at the beginning of the year,” he said.
“But we have said it, we are there. Clearly we will try to make as much trouble as possible until the end… We are doing something that goes beyond expectations given what happened last year.
“We have to continue to feed it [our dream] with all our strength… It has not been easy so far and there will be other obstacles to overcome. We will have to be as good as we have been so far, without excuses.”
