Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believes Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund should not be solely held responsible for the club’s scoring problems.
The 22-year old missed a wonderful opportunity to put the Red Devils ahead in their game against Wolves on Sunday, a chance they were later made to regret as they were defeated 1-0 in front of their home fans.
The former Atalanta striker has only scored three goals in the league this season, and has only scored once in his last 18 league games.
Speaking after the defeat to Wolves, their 15th of the league season, Amorim was quick to defend the striker while encouraging the team to take responsibility in converting their chances.
He said: I think if you look at the games we have several players that miss big chances, not just Rasmus.
Of course, Rasmus, the game is to score goals because he’s a striker, but it’s a team thing. I already said that. Our team should score more goals, it’s not just Rasmus missing chances.
The only way I know is to work on him and show him the videos,” Amorim continued.
“Like you said he needs to score a goal and he won’t score if he is out [of the team] so I try to manage that during games. He needs to score, that’s all, like a striker needs.”
Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee was ruled out of the season last week, leaving Hojlund alongside 18-year old Chido Obi-Martin as the club’s only senior option upfront.
The club has been linked in recent weeks to the likes of Victor Osimhen, Victor Gyokeres, Liam Delap and Ollie Watkins, leaving the Denmark international’s future at Old Trafford in doubt.
“It’s a team thing. Of course, we have an idea of what this team needs but also the guys we play with, we play at least three guys in front to score goals and we have midfielders that can.
All the team needs to score more goals and you have opportunities with the midfielders and the striker. We need to improve as a team because if you don’t score goals in this league it’s impossible to win games”, the 40-year old continued.
Manchester United top-flight status was confirmed on Sunday despite their loss, and they get a chance at redemption next Sunday when they travel to Bournemouth.
