According to reports, Coady Gakpo will not face any severe sanctions for his goal celebration during Liverpool’s title confirming 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur but the Dutchman will instead be issued a warning by the Football Association.
What happened?
Gakpo grabbed Liverpool’s third goal of the match and revealed a vest bearing the message “I belong to Jesus” after taking off his shirt. During the post-match trophy celebrations, the former PSV Eindhoven forward once again removed his shirt. Although removing a shirt usually results in a yellow card, Gakpo drew additional attention as his undershirt violated the regulations set by the International Football Association Board.
What does the law say?
According to Law 4 in the FA’s handbook: “Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.
“Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer’s logo.
“For any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.”
Gakpo escapes punishment
Cleared to play for the remainder of the season, Gakpo will continue to feature for the newly crowned champions as they push to end their campaign on a high. The Dutch forward has played a key role in their title triumph, contributing nine goals and four assists in the Premier League so far.
Liverpool’s celebration tour begins with a trip to Chelsea on Sunday, followed by another big clash against second placed Arsenal the next weekend. The Reds will then wrap up a memorable season — one in which they’ve equaled Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight English titles — with fixtures against Brighton and Crystal Palace.
