Brighton’s Hurzeler proud of character in win over Liverpool

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler was pleased with his team’s showing in their 3-2 comeback win over champions Liverpool on Monday night.

The Seagulls came from behind twice in the game, with a late winner moving them up to eighth on the standings with slight hopes of securing European football next season.

Story of the match

A much-changed Liverpool side took the lead when Conor Bradley breezed past Brighton’s defence before squaring for Harvey Eliott, who tapped in from close range.

Danny Welbeck was denied by Alisson before Yasin Ayari scored in the 32nd minute to pull the hosts level.

However, Dominik Szoboszlai scored a stunner on the stroke of halftime to give the champions the lead going into the break.

English golden boot frontrunner Mohamed Salah missed an open net to increase the Reds advantage before substitute Kaoru Mitoma, scored from a rebound to level the scores at 2-2 after Alisson had saved Danny Welbeck’s goal-bound effort.

Jack Hinshelwood scored a late winner for Brighton, initially ruled out for offside against Matt O’Riley in the buildup, but given after a VAR check deemed him marginally onside.

What Hurzeler said

“There have been a lot of highs and lows throughout the season. It’s important you don’t overreact and important to stay grounded and humble because there is still one game to go but I’m really proud of the team.

It’s not only about playing a football game and the tactical side but it’s about the mental side too. We can only be successful if you stick together and we proved that today, so we are very happy but there is one game to go”, the 32-year old said.

“The players changed the intensity on the pitch. They used the goal as the wake-up signal. Liverpool were impressive in the first 20 minutes but I was happy with the reaction.”

How can Brighton qualify for Europe?

The Seagulls are currently eighth on the standings and must defeat Europa League finalists Tottenham Hotspur in their final match of the season next weekend.

They must also hope that Chelsea finish outside the top-five spots in the league and defeat Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League finals.
