Darren Fletcher has been confirmed Manchester United’s U18 head coach for the upcoming season having worked as technical director and first-team coach since 2021.
United’s statement described an updated Academy set-up allowing Fletcher day-to-day control of the double-winning U18 team while keeping him on the technical director panel.
After leading last term’s Youth Cup victory and Premier League U18 North championship, Travis Binnion is replaced by an overall Head of Player Development appointment.
Having played two decades at Old Trafford, the 41-year-old retired in 2020 after amassing five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.
“I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players,” he told Manutd.com.
He added: “I’m looking forward to working with such a talented age group, supporting them to reach their potential and preparing them to enjoy careers at the highest level possible.”
Academy chairman Nick Cox deemed Fletcher “a perfect fit,” noting his background bridging youth and first-team environments.
Next week brings the preseason training for the youth, and the Scot is eager to develop on United’s illustrious legacy of nurturing local talent into Ruben Amorim’s senior team.
