Andriy Lunin’s Real Madrid exit stance revealed amid transfer interest

Real Madrid’s back up goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is reportedly not keen on a departure from the Santiago Bernabeu despite his limited involvement for Los Blancos over the years.

Lunin was only a teenager (19-years-old) when Real Madrid secured his services from Ukrainian club side Zorya Luhansk back in 2018. In his first couple of years as a Real Madrid player, he enjoyed decent loan spells at Leganes, Real Valladolid and Real Oviedo.

Following those loan spells, the Ukraine international has remained part of the Real Madrid first team setup, albeit, receiving very limited game time.

Over the last five seasons, Lunin has managed only 62 appearances across all competitions in the colours of the 36-time LaLiga champions and heading into the 25/26 season, it doesn’t seem like his fortunes at the Spanish capital are about to get better.

Real Madrid have reached an agreement to extend first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ contract until 2027. The new deal ensures the towering Belgian will remain Los Blancos’ undisputed number 1 for the next few seasons, having firmly cemented his status as one of football’s finest shot-stoppers.

As a result, Lunin is set to continue playing back up to Courtois for another two years should he decide to stay at the Bernabeu. The Ukrainian’s future is currently subject to speculations, with recent reports claiming that LaLiga side Villarreal have expressed interest and made an enquiry about his availability.

However, Marca reports that the 26-year-old desires to remain at Real Madrid despite his current predicament. He is currently under contract till 2030 and perhaps, believes his time at the Spanish capital will come.

For now, Lunin will continue to provide cover for Courtois as Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid aim to reclaim their status as Spain’s best team after Barcelona outclassed them last season.
