WCQ: South Africa’s Hugo Broos focused on crucial Lesotho clash

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has stated that his team will approach their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria one game at a time.

Bafana Bafana became the first and only African country till date to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010, but have not qualified for any edition since then.

They are currently in pole position to qualify from Group C, as they are currently first with 13 points, five points ahead of Rwanda in second place.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s must-win clash against Lesotho, Hugo Broos emphasized that his side are well focused and are approaching one game at a time.

“The game next Friday is about a week away and I don’t want to think about Nigeria for the moment”, Hugo Broos said.

“We will see after the game with Lesotho who and how we are going to play against Nigeria. My focus is on Lesotho because I know that is the most important game for the moment.”

A win against Lesotho on Friday will move them closer to reaching the 2026 tournament in the United States, putting them in a commanding position ahead of their clash with Nigeria next week.

“It is important we get victory against them [Lesotho] because if we don’t maybe we are going have more troubles in the future. There is the game against Nigeria and we have to play against Zimbabwe and Rwanda”, he continued.

“We have to avoid dropping points. That will put us under stress when we play against Zimbabwe and Rwanda in October. Because of this, we need the victory on Friday and follow that up with Nigeria.”
