Thomas Tuchel has backed his England side to continue improving against defensive setups after admitting progress has been made in recent games.
England remain perfect in World Cup qualifying but their narrow wins over Andorra highlighted the difficulty of breaking down low blocks. Tuchel, however, believes his team are learning fast.
“We’re getting better. If we are aggressive and front footed and disciplined and put in the necessary effort off the ball, we will hopefully win the ball early and have a lot of the ball,” Tuchel said.
“The players want to have the ball, they are used to having the ball and dominate matches. This can then lead to another low block and another 5-4-1 or a 5-3-2.
“Every match is different, every opponent is different with how they play within the structure – with different behaviours and distances in between the lines. But we have to play, take advantage of the spaces that they show us tomorrow.”
The German coach admitted that breaking a 5-4-1 system is always tough but stressed that his team are adapting well.
“We did not struggle so much [against Andorra] but it’s difficult to break a low block down in a 5-4-1, there’s no secret about that.
“But we have progress, I’m happy with the work in the camp and the attitude of the players. I think we’re getting there. I say it because I am absolutely convinced.
“I see what I see, I feel what I feel. I think we will get better and better. We are very clear in how we play it to play and how we want to break it down.”
The Three Lions will be hoping to make a statement as they lock horns with Serbia on Tuesday.
