Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has dismissed rumors of tension between him and the club over the transfer of Marc Guehi to Liverpool this summer.
Palace’s captain, Guehi, looked certain to swap London for Anfield on transfer deadline day after a £35 million fee had been agreed between both clubs.
The 25-year-old traveled to Liverpool to undergo medical examination, although the move later fell through as the Eagles called off the deal in the final hours of the window having failed to find a suitable replacement.
Reports also revealed that Glasner, who led the team to success in the FA Cup and Community Shield, had threatened to leave the club if an exit was sanctioned for Guehi.
“I never threatened to leave the club, never. I didn’t have to threaten anybody”, Glasner revealed.
“There were no bad tensions between the chairman and myself. It was really just a discussion about sports, and he decided against the money and for the sporting perspective of Crystal Palace. Big credit to the chairman.”
Speaking ahead of Crystal Palace’s weekend game against Sunderland, as they look to continue their unbeaten start to the season, Glasner praised Guehi’s display of sportsmanship despite the failed transfer.
“It was clear, for him, that he stuck to his contract. It is credit to Marc that he never threatened to strike”, he added.
“He is a very honest person, that is why I was never worried about this situation. He will be our captain as long as he’s here, because he’s just such a great player and such a great personality.”
Crystal Palace host Sunderland at Selhurst Park on Saturday, looking to add another win against the newly-promoted side.
