Barcelona president Joan Laporta has offered hope over Lamine Yamal’s recovery, hinting that the teenager could be back in action as early as Sunday, September 28 for the Blaugrana’s La Liga game against Real Sociedad.
The 18-year-old has missed Barca’s last three fixtures with a groin problem, sitting out wins over Valencia, Newcastle United, and Getafe. His last appearance came in August’s frustrating draw with Rayo Vallecano.
Club officials were frustrated at how the injury developed, pointing the finger at the Spanish national team after Yamal returned from international duty in severe pain, despite their medical staff having already warned La Roja of his discomfort.
The forward played more than 70 minutes in each of their games during the international break, even though both matches were comfortably under control. Barca claimed the excessive workload aggravated his condition, forcing him onto the sidelines at a crucial stage of the season.
Hansi Flick’s side have had to adapt in Yamal’s absence, with Ferran Torres impressing by scoring twice against Getafe. The German coach has also considered recalling Marcus Rashford, who was dropped for disciplinary reasons before that game.
However, Laporta’s update suggests fans could soon see their brightest talent back on the pitch, though Thursday’s clash with Real Oviedo is expected to come too soon.
Off the field, Yamal’s growing reputation was underlined in Paris on Monday night, where he collected the Kopa Trophy for the second consecutive year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
While PSG’s Ousmane Dembele claimed the main prize, Yamal’s recognition reinforced his status as one of world football’s most exciting prospects, and Barcelona will be eager to have him fit and firing again before long.
