Leslie Notsi backs Lesotho for shock result against Nigeria in World Cup qualifier

Lesotho head coach Leslie Notsi is confident his side can pull off a massive upset when they face Nigeria in a crucial World Cup qualifying match on Friday.

The Crocodiles face the Super Eagles in a group C qualifying match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, despite having very slim hopes of securing qualification.

They have never played at the World Cup and are massive underdogs going into the clash with the three-time champions, who must win to boost their own chances of qualifying.

Lesotho are fifth on the group with nine points, but are only two points behind Nigeria who are in third place, with only two rounds of matches to play.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the clash, Notsi believes his side are in a better position and can record a memorable win to dash the Super Eagles hopes.

“We are approaching this match knowing it’s not going to be easy, but the self belief that we have had before, in our previous encounter.

“We believe, we have an opportunity to continue where we left off in our last match in November 2023”, the Lesotho head coach revealed.

“Truly, it has given us hope to redeem ourselves in the last two fixtures we played. It has given us hope that we can secure points that we believe can put Lesotho at a better stage.”

The Crocodiles benefited from a three-point advantage after South Africa were docked three points for a disciplinary action, with FIFA awarding maximum points to Lesotho instead.

They recorded a massive 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the reverse fixture, giving Notsi full confidence of repeating the same feat.

“Fortunately, we don’t have any serious injuries that we can worry about coming into this fixture. So, Its a clean bill of health for us”, he continued.

“A fixture that we are expecting a tough match playing one of the best in the continent. A team that consists some of the best players on our continent playing in the best leagues in Europe.”
