Ancelotti issues verdict on Neymar’s possible return to Brazil national team

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has backed Neymar to fight his way back into the national team ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Ancelotti, appointed in May as Brazil’s first foreign coach in six decades, has already guided the five-time world champions to qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Looking ahead to the World Cup slated for next summer, one big question for Ancelotti to answer is whether Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer, still has a place in the national team having last featured in 2023.

Now back at Santos, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored three goals in 13 league appearances this season, though injuries have cut short his playing time.

However, Ancelotti insists the door remains open for the 33-year-old forward, provided he can stay fit and prove his form.

“If Neymar is in [a] good condition, then of course he can fit into the national team,” Ancelotti said.

“If Neymar is fit then he can play in any team in the world.”

Ancelotti also revealed his desire to become the first foreign Brazil national team manager to win the FIFA World Cup with the South American giants.

“Brazilian players have the quality to play beautiful football but you have to think about what you mean by beautiful football,” Ancelotti added.

“Brazilian players have individual quality but that is combined with teamwork and movement off the ball, and that’s very important in football.

“My goal is to give my best for the Brazil national team, to try to get them to perform at their best and to win the World Cup. Of course, no foreign-born coach has ever won the World Cup but there is always a first time in life.”
