Virgil van Dijk remains confident Liverpool will recover from their recent struggles after Brentford handed them a fourth successive Premier League defeat on Saturday.
The Reds had arrived at the Gtech Community Stadium buoyed by their 5-1 midweek thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, but their domestic woes continued in West London.
Brentford raced into a two-goal lead through Dango Ouattara and Kevin Schade, punishing a lacklustre first-half display from Arne Slot’s side.
Milos Kerkez reduced the deficit before the break but Igor Thiago’s penalty restored the hosts’ cushion. Mohamed Salah’s fine strike later set up a tense finale, but the reigning champions couldn’t complete the comeback.
Pressed for an explanation for Liverpool’s terrible dip in form, the Dutch defender told TNT Sport: “It’s difficult to say. The fact we didn’t keep a clean sheet for nine games!
“It’s easy to blame a particular person, the backline or set-pieces, but it’s a collective thing in the end. Everyone has to look in the mirror, including myself.
“I am sure we will get out of this, but we won’t do it just by talking about it. We will try to improve. We need each other, we need the support.
“We need the people who were celebrating with us last year to be with us now even more. We will get out of this because we have the quality.”
The result leaves Liverpool with as many league defeats as they suffered throughout last season. It also marks their first run of four straight losses since February 2021.
Liverpool’s next fixture offers little respite as they prepare to host Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup fourth round on Wednesday. The Eagles have already defeated the Reds twice this season, once in the Community Shield and again in the Premier League.
