Man United’s Amorim defends Sesko after Neville criticism

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has come to the defence of Benjamin Sesko after former player Gary Neville questioned the striker’s form.

Sesko has endured a slow start to life at Old Trafford, scoring just twice in ten Premier League games. His struggles continued in the 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, where he failed to convert several chances.

Neville, speaking after the match on NBC Sports, suggested that “the jury is out” on the Slovenian forward, adding: “He’s well off it compared to the other summer signings that Man Utd made up front in [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo.”

Responding to the remarks, Amorim admitted the 21-year-old has found the criticism hard to handle but urged patience and perspective.

“Of course nobody likes to hear he struggled a little bit, that is a fact,” Amorim said. “It’s not personal, what I try to explain to the players, it is an opinion – it can change. What’s true today in three weeks could be a lie – of course hard to hear. My advice to Ben: ‘You will get used to it, it’s natural’. We will protect Ben and he wants to succeed so he’s going to succeed.”

The Slovenian’s work rate and attitude have impressed Amorim despite the lack of goals, and the Portuguese boss remains confident the striker will soon hit his stride in United colours.

With crucial fixtures ahead, the Red Devils will be hoping the young forward quickly silences his critics, starting with a strong response on the pitch.
