Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal will miss Spain’s crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Turkey due to a recurrent groin injury.
The 18-year-old has battled with injury this season, but was initially named to Luis de la Fuente’s squad for both matches this month.
However, the Spanish football federation confirmed that the winger underwent a procedure to solve the injury problem at Barcelona and will require a brief period of rest.
The RFEF also confirmed that they were not aware of the decision, but have called up a replacement ahead of the two matches.
“The RFEF’s medical services wish to express their surprise and concern after learning at 1:47 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, the day of the official start of the national team’s training camp, that Yamal had undergone an invasive radiofrequency procedure to treat his pubic discomfort that same morning”, the Spanish football federation revealed in a statement.
“This procedure was performed without prior notification to the national team’s medical staff, who only learned of the details through a report received at 10:40 p.m. on Monday, which indicated a medical recommendation for rest for 7-10 days.”
Yamal first suffered the injury while on international duty with Spain in September and missed four games for Barcelona afterwards.
The youngster also missed the reigning European champions’ squad for the October qualifiers after suffering an aggravation of the injury.
“In view of this situation, and prioritising the player’s health, safety and well-being at all times, the RFEF has taken the decision to release the player from the current squad”, the statement continued.
Spain could seal their spot at the 2026 World Cup on Saturday if they defeat Georgia and Turkey fail to win their match against Bulgaria.
