Manchester United’s push for a new 100,000-seater stadium has gained fresh momentum after Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham restated his full backing for the project.
United are not seeking public funding for the build, but Burnham highlighted the plan as a key part of his new 10-year £1bn ‘Greater Manchester Good Growth Fund’.
The project was described as central to driving the Old Trafford Regeneration scheme, which he called the biggest sports-led redevelopment in the UK since London 2012.
United COO Collette Roche welcomed the mayor’s stance and doubled down on the club’s ambition.
“We want to build the world’s best football stadium as a new home for Manchester United and a venue for the biggest international events, including the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” she said.
The support gives the Red Devils more wind in their sails as they push towards a historic rebuild that could reshape the city’s sporting landscape.
