Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was delighted with his side’s response to their Tyne-Wear derby disappointment as they booked their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals on Wednesday night.
Still hurting from Sunday’s defeat to Sunderland, the Magpies showed resilience at St James’ Park, edging Fulham 2-1 in dramatic fashion to keep their title defence alive.
Newcastle struck first through Yoane Wissa, who marked his start with an early opener, but the Cottagers regrouped and found a way back into the contest to restore parity before the interval.
With the tie seemingly heading for extra time, Lewis Miley produced the decisive moment deep into stoppage time, rising highest to glance Sandro Tonali’s corner beyond the Fulham goalkeeper and send the home crowd into raptures.
The victory sees Newcastle reach the last four of the EFL Cup for the third time in four seasons and for the first time in consecutive campaigns, setting up a mouth-watering two-legged semi-final showdown with Manchester City.
“It was important to bounce back from Sunderland, to come back in a positive fashion,” Howe said after the game.
“We want to be competitive and win trophies – this one we had a great experience last year. We want to do that again, but it will be tough with the teams left in the competition.
“The will and drive to win was there. We gave everything even in difficult moments. The challenge is to grow and improve.”
Newcastle United will now be looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League but it doesn’t get any easier for them as they welcome Enzo Maresca’s unpredictable Chelsea to St. James’ Park this weekend.
