Crystal Palace have secured the signing of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur in a club-record £35 million transfer, with the winger expressing his excitement at the fresh opportunity.
Johnson, 24, joined Spurs in 2023 from fellow EPL side Nottingham Forest for a fee of £47.5 million and was their top scorer last season with 18 goals in all competitions.
The Wales forward also netted the only goal in the 1-0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final last season, ending their trophy drought.
The winger has lost his place in the lineup this season with the arrival of new manager Thomas Frank from Brentford and has been limited to just six starts in the league.
“I’m really excited and I’m really happy. Crystal Palace are such a great club, one that I’ve always admired. It’s a great time for me to be here and join the journey that this club is on”, Johnson admitted.
Johnson signed a four and a half year deal at Selhurst Park and becomes the club most expensive arrival, eclipsing the £32 million fee for Christian Benteke in 2016.
The 24-year-old will wear the number ‘11’ jersey at the club and is expected to slot into the attack as a direct replacement for Eberechi Eze, who left for Arsenal in the summer.
“I’m really delighted that Brennan has joined the club. He arrives very early in the window, so credit to the club for making this happen so quickly”, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner stated.
“Brennan will give us options in our attacking play with his pace and goalscoring ability and with all the upcoming games he will be a valuable addition to the squad.”
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish also reacted to the transfer, expressing delight at coveting one of EPL’s bright talents.
“I’m delighted that Brennan has joined us – an exciting young talent with an excellent recent record in domestic, continental and international football.
“We feel we are the perfect place for Brennan to continue his already impressive journey, and his arrival bolsters our attacking options in what is proving our busiest season to date, competing on numerous fronts including, for the first time, in Europe.”
The Wales winger could be in contention to make his debut for the Eagles when they face Newcastle United on Sunday.
