Nuno Espirito Santo has apologized to West Ham United supporters following their ‘embarrassing’ 3-0 defeat to bottom-placed Wolves in Saturday’s EPL clash.
The Hammers headed to the Molineux on the back of an eight-match winless streak and face a Wolves side who were winless in the league so far this season.
However, a lackluster performance from the entire team gifted the home side three goals and a first win of the EPL season, leaving West Ham four points adrift of safety.
The London side failed to muster an effort on goal throughout the encounter, to the disappointment of the Portuguese manager.
“I have to apologise to the fans, I have to apologise. We have to apologise to the fans, those that travelled today, it was embarrassing. There’s not much I can say other than we are sorry, we are sorry, because what we showed today was not good enough”, Nuno said after the match.
“We needed much more from our players. The way we started and the way we performed was very poor, it was embarrassing because I don’t recall one day that I felt so bad on a football pitch like today.
It was a failure of many things, mistakes and not reacting to those mistakes, making mistakes and then a second mistake and over and over again not being able to control and create any situation of danger”, he continued.
“I think we didn’t achieve one shot on goal, so that says a lot.”
Jhon Arias opened the scoring inside four minutes with his first Wolves goal, before Hwang Hee-Chan, who had provided the opener scored a second from the penalty spot.
Mateus Mane fired home a stunning third before halftime as Wolves eased to their first Premier League win of the campaign.
“Now it’s about recovery, it’s a quick turnaround, recovering not only physically but more than anything, it’s to address the situation and being clear among ourselves that we need much more today,” Nuno added.
“I am particularly sad to say this but what I saw today from our players is not good enough.”
West Ham United will hope to end their poor run of form when they face Nottingham Forest next Tuesday at the London Stadium.
