Akor Adams sends heartfelt message to mother after first AFCON goal

Super Eagles forward Akor Adams scored his first goal at the African Cup of Nations in the 4-0 win over Mozambique on Monday night and has dedicated the strike to his mother.

The Sevilla striker made his AFCON debut in the 2-1 win over Tanzania and unlike his national team debut where he scored, he was unable to get on the scoresheet in that encounter.

However, he scored Nigeria’s fourth in the emphatic victory as they progressed to the last eight of the competition and maintained their 100% record in Morocco.

“First, glory to God for the privilege to have my first AFCON goal like all of you have been waiting for. The goal is dedicated to my mum, she’s supposed to be here but she’s at the hospital right now. She was admitted this morning, but she’s much better right now”, the 25-year-old expressed.

Victor Osimhen (2), Ademola Lookman and Adams got the goal as Nigeria sealed their biggest win so far at the tournament.

They also recorded their first clean sheet of the 2025 AFCON, limiting Mozambique to only a couple of opportunities with an excellent overall display.

“I’m happy for the team, Victor had a fantastic game and Lookman also had a fantastic game, we came out with the victory and we are happy”, Adams continued.

“It’s very important because people have been talking about all kind of things that we cannot keep from conceding goals, but today again we proved that we can defend good. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing against, we can defend good and can be very detailed in our communication. We came out with the clean sheet.”

The Super Eagles will now face the winner of the clash between Algeria and DR Congo in the last eight, scheduled to hold in Marrakesh on Saturday.
