Nigeria advance to AFCON quarterfinals after dominant win over Mozambique

Nigeria booked their spot in the last eight at the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco after an emphatic 4-0 win over Mozambique in Monday’s Round of 16 clash.

The Super Eagles continued their impressive display in Morocco with a fourth straight victory as the advanced into the quarterfinals.

Victor Osimhen ditched his trademark face mask early in the clash and had a strike ruled out for offside inside just two minutes.

However, Nigeria finally got their goal in the first half when Ademola Lookman fired in after he was played through by Akor Adams, although midfielder Alex Iwobi earned much credit with a brilliant defence splitting pass in the buildup.

Iwobi played another stunning pass to Lookman in the buildup to the second goal, which was scored by Osimhen at the back post.

The Super Eagles continued to dominate the clash and took a two-goal lead into the break and were one foot in the last eight.

Osimhen grabbed his second of the game and third of the tournament with a goal immediately after the restart to put the team three goals up.

There was no way back into the clash for the Mambas who struggled to test Stanley Nwabali in the Nigerian goal.

The three-time champions then missed several other chances to add to the tally, much to the frustration of Osimhen, who angrily confronted Lookman before he was taken off.

Adams then added a fourth late in the game to complete a comprehensive 4-0 victory for Eric Chelle’s side and send them into the last eight.

The Super Eagles have now scored 12 times so far at the tournament, the most of any team and also kept their first clean sheet of the tournament.

They will now face either Algeria or DR Congo in the last eight of the competition next Saturday.
