Rosenior stays grounded after dream Chelsea start as focus shifts to Arsenal clash

Liam Rosenior has struck a calm and measured tone after beginning his tenure with a statement victory, making it clear that while the result was encouraging, the real work is only just beginning.

Chelsea’s new head coach oversaw an emphatic 5–1 FA Cup third-round victory over Charlton Athletic at The Valley, a performance that provided early momentum and a glimpse of the squad’s attacking potential.

However, rather than getting carried away, Rosenior was quick to bring the focus back to consistency as the fixture list intensifies.

“I’m one game in,” he said. “Some of our passages of play were beautiful to watch. We’ve got magnificent players. My idea of football is not important. It’s about winning games of football consistently.

“It’s a good start. It’s just the start and we have to stay consistent now in a very, very hectic schedule.”

Next up, the spotlight shifts sharply as Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, where Rosenior will take charge from the home dugout for the first time.

The challenge is immediate and intense, with Arsenal visiting for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final: a fixture that offers a chance to build momentum across competitions.

In the lead-up to that clash, Rosenior revealed that his early work with the squad has focused less on tactical overhauls and more on mentality, energy, and response under pressure.

“I’ve got another two days. I think the biggest thing I challenged the players on was our reactions to set-backs, our intensity. Nothing tactical, nothing technical. These players are outstanding. They’ve been well coached before me.

“I was very happy with the togetherness and the spirit of the group on Saturday. I was very happy with the intensity that they ran at, winning duels, winning headers, all of the basics. And that’s where you get your joy from.”

While modern football often revolves around systems and shapes, Rosenior made it clear that his philosophy extends beyond the tactics board. For him, success lies in blending structure with attitude, discipline, and hunger.

“There are other elements to football other than tactics. Tactics are one element. Shape, systems, technique, they’re all wonderful things. But there are other things that I feel like maybe we can improve on. And that’s what we’ll keep working on as well as the tactical side of the game.”

With a strong first step taken and a high-stakes semi-final looming, Rosenior’s Chelsea journey is already gathering pace. The challenge now is to turn promise into progress and one win into a run.
