West Brom sign ex-Man United coach Ramsay as new manager

West Bromwich Albion have moved swiftly to reshape their season by appointing former Manchester United first-team coach Eric Ramsay as their new head coach.

The 34-year-old arrives from MLS side Minnesota United, where he has spent the last two seasons, and steps into the role following the dismissal of Ryan Mason earlier this week.

Mason’s departure came after a difficult run of results, capped by a 10th straight away defeat that has left Albion hovering in 18th place in the Championship.

Ramsay has committed to a two-and-a-half-year contract after West Brom reached a compensation agreement with Minnesota United. He is set to take charge for the first time on Friday when the Baggies host Middlesbrough at The Hawthorns.

The Welsh coach brings an impressive and modern CV despite his age. He joined Manchester United in 2021 as a player development coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and went on to work within the first-team setup under Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag.

Beyond club football, Ramsay also gained international experience as assistant to Wales boss Rob Page in 2023, a role he held for six months.

Momentum then carried him across the Atlantic, where he made history in February 2024 by becoming the youngest permanent head coach in MLS when he took charge of Minnesota United.

His impact was immediate, guiding the club into the play-offs and later overseeing a record-breaking league campaign that ended with a fourth-place finish and a semi-final exit.

Ramsay will not be making the move alone. He is joined by Dennis Lawrence, who arrives from Minnesota as his assistant.

Lawrence brings valuable experience from spells working with Roberto Martinez at Wigan Athletic and Everton, as well as alongside Mark Robins at Coventry City.

As West Brom look to steady the ship and climb away from danger, Ramsay’s appointment signals a fresh direction built around progressive coaching and long-term planning. All eyes now turn to Friday night as a new chapter begins at The Hawthorns.
