Real Madrid have announced that Xabi Alonso has left his position as head coach after only 232 days in charge.
The Spaniard joined Los Blancos in May 2025 after leaving German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, but spent just over seven months at the club before his departure.
Alonso, 44, led the team to the 2026 Spanish Supercopa final after defeating city rivals Atletico Madrid in the semifinals, but suffered a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the final on Sunday night.
In a statement released by the 15-time European champions, the club thanked the 44-year-old for his service and confirmed that he will no longer be at the club.
“Real Madrid C.F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as head coach of the first team.
Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”
Alonso won 24 of his 34 matches in charge of the club, losing six times and recording four draws leaving the club with a 70.58% win percentage.
Real Madrid have already announced former Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa as their new first team head coach for the remainder of the season.
Los Blancos will next be in action on Wednesday against Albacete in the Copa Del Rey Round of 16, before facing Levante in the La Liga next weekend.
