Dominik Szoboszlai has issued an apology to his Liverpool teammates following a costly mistake in their 4-1 win over Barnsley in Monday night’s FA Cup third round clash.
The midfielder opened the scoring with a stunning long range strike in the first half, but gifted the away side a goal later in the half when he attempted a back-heel in front of Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Adams Phillips capitalized on the mistake and fired home to give his side a little form of hope in the clash, as the home side took a 2-1 advantage into the break after Jeremie Frimpong had scored a second earlier in the game.
“Sorry for the team again. I made it hard for us with the easy mistake, I would say. Football happens, we move on. We go to the next round”, the Hungary captain said after the match.
“We wanted to show we take the FA Cup seriously. We showed today we need the whole squad, they also showed quality. We need everyone.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot responded in the second half and brought on two of the club’s big-money summer signings – Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
The two players then combined for the Reds next two goals as they sealed a 4-1 win to advance to the next round.
Wirtz first struck in the 84th minute to restore their two-goal advantage, before Ekitike netted in stoppage-time after he was played through by Wirtz.
“We need more time to get to know each other better. All the new guys have settled well I think. I’m happy for Flo and Hugo as well. This was also for the fans. We move on.”
Liverpool advance to the fourth round of this season’s FA Cup and their reward is a home clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.
