Kompany praises response as second-half surge sends Bayern into last 16

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany hailed his team’s strong response in the second half as they booked automatic qualification to the UEFA Champions League last 16 after a composed 2-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise.

The German champions kept a clean sheet, managed the game intelligently, and found their cutting edge when it mattered most.

The opening half was a test of patience. The Old Lady matched Bayern stride for stride, pressing with intensity and showing the energy that has defined their European campaign.

However, after the restart, the Bavarians shifted gears, raised the tempo, and imposed their authority, even while navigating adversity following a red card in the second half.

The outcome sealed progression and underlined Bayern’s growing control in the league phase.

Kompany reflected on the performance with trademark honesty, highlighting the team’s reaction and resilience.

“Despite the red card in the second half, we actually played very well,” the gaffer revealed.

“I feel we definitely stepped things up after half-time. The team reacted well again.

“It wasn’t enough in the first half, but much better after that.

“The opponent threw all they had in the first half. They’re fresh and have a lot of energy.”

He added: “You often only manage to break through in the second half. The result isn’t always settled in the first half.

“But still we have to say our first half can be better. We weren’t at our highest level.”

Even so, the numbers tell their own story: qualification secured, two goals scored, zero conceded, and another European night navigated with maturity. The Belgian manager was keen to underline that balance.

“But you also can’t forget that we’re playing every two or three days at the moment.

“We’re doing an outstanding job there and winning our games.

“We kept a clean sheet today. You need to take that into account too.”

With momentum firmly on their side and knockout football ahead, the German top-flight team continue to look every inch a team built for the long UCL run.
