Yoane Wissa has expressed excitement after his brilliant display helped Newcastle United to a comfortable 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in Wednesday’s Champions League clash.
The Congolese forward made his first start in the competition since his move to the Magpies last summer and capped the occasion with a goal and an assist in the first half.
The 29-year-old joined the club on summer transfer deadline day, but had a delayed debut aafter suffering several injury worries.
Speaking after his player of the match display, the former Brentford forward referred to the night as a ‘special’ one after his brilliant display.
“It was a good night and we know the target was to win today. For me, it’s a special night. Scoring and assisting, I’m really pleased with that”, Wissa stated.
“It’s been good. They were a tricky opponent and play good football. We scored from two mistakes with high pressure.
“They like to play and the main thing was to press them high, we did it well. Really pleased with the hard work today.”
Anthony Gordon added a second from a Wissa assist, before Harvey Barnes scored a third in the second half to seal the win.
Newcastle are up to seventh in the standings and now face European champions PSG in their final match next week, hoping for a win to seal a top-eight finish and an automatic place in the knockout rounds.
“They are the best team in Europe”, Wissa added, speaking of the Magpies next opponents in the competition.
“Now we focus on Sunday [vs Villa]. We need a lot of belief and we need to be strong mentally.
“It is not going to be easy, we need to believe we can definitely beat them.”
Newcastle United face Aston Villa in the league on Sunday, before heading to France for their final UCL league phase game next week.
