Josiah King marked his 17th birthday in dream fashion, putting pen to paper on his first professional contract after rising through the ranks following seven years in the academy.
For the attack-minded full-back, it was a milestone moment that reflected patience, growth and belief in a pathway he has trusted since joining as an under-10.
Having steadily progressed through the age groups, King’s development has been clear to see, with impressive performances at under-18 and under-21 level earlier this season further underlining his readiness for the next step.
Speaking after signing, the teenager could hardly hide his delight at achieving a long-held ambition.
“It’s something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time,” King said. “So it’s always good to achieve something that you’ve always wanted to achieve. So I’m happy about that.
“It’s a good day to celebrate my birthday. It’s in the top one birthdays, for sure.”
As the action now shifts from youth promise to professional responsibility, King remains convinced he is in the right environment to keep pushing forward.
Having spent more than seven years in the academy system, he believes the transition from Hale End to London Colney has been carefully structured to prepare young players for senior football.
“They prepare you well to come to Colney [from Hale End], because I think especially the last season, bringing the under-16s over for day release, you already get a of a taste of what you’re going to get when you come here, so it’s good prep.
“I think they’ve got my best interests. They’ve taught me a lot. I’ve been here a long time, so I’m ready to continue the journey with them.”
On the pitch, King has already tested himself in demanding environments, featuring in both the EFL Trophy and the UEFA Youth League this season.
Those experiences have accelerated his learning curve, particularly in a role that blends defensive discipline with attacking freedom.
Originally deployed as an attacker, the teenager has since found his natural home in the backline, carrying those offensive instincts into his current position.
“I think my playing style is a bit mixed with attacking and defending because I was naturally an attacker in the earlier stages. Then I started playing right back, midway through my journey.
“It’s a good balance between attacking and defending. I like to go 1v1 attacking and defending. It’s a good mixture.
“I think it’s a position where you can still show a lot of ways to express yourself. Whether that’s being up in the opposition’s half or getting out of tight spaces in your half as well. So it’s good.”
With his professional journey now officially underway, King’s focus turns to building on this landmark moment and continuing his rise.
The contract remains subject to the completion of regulatory processes, but for the young full-back, the whistle has already blown on an exciting new chapter.
