Liam Rosenior has delivered a powerful endorsement of Moises Caicedo, insisting there is no defensive midfielder anywhere in world football he would rather build his team around.
As Chelsea gear up for their Champions League meeting with Napoli, the Blues boss made it clear that the Ecuadorian remains central to his plans both now and in the future.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion in August 2023, Caicedo has steadily grown into one of the most influential midfielders in the game.
From anchoring Chelsea’s engine room to dictating tempo under pressure, his rise has been marked by consistency and big-game authority.
That trajectory was underlined last season when he played a decisive role in the club’s UEFA Conference League triumph, memorably getting on the scoresheet in the final against Real Betis before helping the Blues lift the Club World Cup last summer.
Naturally, individual recognition followed. Caicedo swept both the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards for the 2024/25 campaign and has carried that momentum into the current season.
Even amid a managerial transition, his importance has not dipped, featuring in four of Rosenior’s five matches since the head coach took charge and continuing to set the standard in midfield battles.
Speaking alongside Caicedo at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Napoli encounter, Rosenior was emphatic in his assessment of the 24-year-old’s quality and football intelligence.
“In my opinion, as a defensive midfield player, I wouldn’t want to sit next to anybody else in world football,” the manager said. “That’s what I think of Moi; he knows that as I’ve told him.
“I have a background at Brighton, so I know everything about his career. The scary thing is that yes, he is young, but he sometimes plays like he is 35 years old because his understanding of the game is top.
“For me, one of the most exciting things about coming to this club was to work with players of Moi’s level and capacity, but also try to help improve even more, which I think is achievable.”
As Chelsea prepare to take another step on the European stage, Rosenior’s message is clear.
With Caicedo patrolling midfield, the Blues possess not just stability but a platform to dominate matches, and in the eyes of their manager, a defensive midfielder without equal.
