Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has criticized the club’s hierarchy after their quiet business in the January transfer window.
The Europa League champions held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw in their last outing on Sunday, but had only 11 senior players available for that clash.
Romero, who was forced off at halftime during their Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt last week played the match on Sunday, but with illness.
Spurs currently have up to 13 players injured at the moment, leaving them short of options midway into the season.
However, it is understood that the club prefer to invest heavily in the squad at the end of the season, with Conor Gallagher, Souza and 18-year-old James Wilson, the only arrivals this month.
“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible”, Romero said in a post on social media.
“I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available — unbelievable but true and disgraceful.”
It marked the second time in a few weeks that the Argentine has criticized the club’s ownership, after also slamming them in a now-edited post on social media in January.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has been under intense pressure over the club’s poor form, but matters are out of his hand due to the injury situation of the club.
Spurs are winless in their last six league outings and head to Old Trafford next to face in-form Manchester United.
“We’ll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that’s left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans”, Romero added.
Tottenham Hotspur and Man United face-off in a repeat of the 2025 Europa League final next Saturday.
