Omar Marmoush has hailed Manchester City’s ‘mentality and passion’ following their convincing EFL Cup semifinal win over Newcastle United.
The Cityzens entered the second leg affair on Wednesday night with an important two goal advantage from the first leg and sealed another 3-1 win to progress 5-1 on aggregate.
The Egyptian forward grabbed a brace himself, while Tijjani Reijnders added a third in an impressive attacking display, although they had goalkeeper James Trafford to thank as well.
Speaking after the clash, Marmoush praised his teammates for their focus and determination which made it possible to reach the final of the competition.
“For sure, from the first minute of the game we were very focused. We showed our mentality and our passion to win the game. We’re very happy that we did that”, Marmoush stated after the match.
“I’m very, very excited. It’s the best feeling to reach a final. We would like to reach every final we can reach.”
Marmoush’s first goal of the night was pretty fortunate as Dan Burn’s attempt to block a shot deflected off his boot and into the net.
His second also came after an error by Kieran Trippier, allowing him to head home from close range to double his side’s tally.
Reijnders added a third to cap a dominant first half performance as City were cruising into the final of the competition.
Newcastle improved after the break and grabbed a consolation through Anthony Elanga and despite other efforts to score, the game ended 3-1 in favour of City.
“We’re very happy to be there”, Marmoush added.
“Now focus on the next games and hopefully we can win the final.”
There will be a new EFL Cup champion this season following the elimination of Newcastle United, when Manchester City and Arsenal clash in the final on March 22.
