Leicester City receive six-point deduction for financial rule breach

Former Premier League champions Leicester City have been docked six points by the EFL after they were found guilty of breaching profit and sustainability rules.

The Foxes had been charged in May 2025 for breaching financial rules during the 2023-24 season and have now suffered a six-point deduction which applies immediately.

Leicester were relegated to the second division last season and were previously 17th on the Championship standings, but have now dropped to 20th after their latest sanction.

This leaves them just above the drop zone on goal difference, giving them a tough task with about 16 league games left to go.

While the commission’s findings significantly reduced the unprecedented scale of the sanction originally sought by the Premier League, the recommendation remains disproportionate and does not adequately reflect the mitigating factors presented, the importance of which cannot be overstated given the potential impact on our sporting ambitions this season,” the club statement read following their points deduction.

“We are now reviewing the decision in full and considering the options available to us.

“We remain committed to engaging constructively and ensuring that any action is fair, proportionate and determined through the appropriate processes.”

The club previously avoided a point deduction during the 2022-23 season after allegedly breaching financial rules, but have been found guilty and punished this time around.

Leicester City got promoted to the Premier League after that season, but went back to the second division immediately, lasting just one campaign in the top-flight.

The Foxes are currently without a manager following the dismissal of Martin Cifuentes last month after a series of poor results.

They are also winless in their last four outings, losing three and now head to their weekend clash against Birmingham City, needing a win to avoid dropping into the bottom four.

Action resumes for match-day 31 in the EFL championship this weekend, with teams battling for survival, play-offs and promotion to the Premier League.
