Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp believes Mikel Arteta’s side have what it takes to go all the way in the Premier League, insisting their closest rivals currently lack the consistency to stop the Gunners, provided Arsenal keep their nerve.
After another twist-filled weekend, Arsenal sit six points clear of Manchester City at the summit.
City’s late comeback win over Liverpool at Anfield has, however, kept the race alive, and with a full round of midweek fixtures before the FA Cup fourth round, that cushion could shrink to three points by the time Arsenal travel to Brentford on Thursday.
Still, Bergkamp feels the balance of power remains with the north London club. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, the former Arsenal forward urged focus while sounding a clear note of caution.
“The danger is, of course, that people start to talk about the last few seasons,” Bergkamp said. “If the players let that come to you, if you are going to mention it yourself, for example, then the players will know.“I know what Arsene (Wenger) always said: ‘Every game is a final, just focus on the next game’. That is the main thing now.”
Bergkamp went on to explain why he believes Arsenal’s challengers may fall short over the long haul.
“I wouldn’t be too worried because I feel the other teams aren’t strong enough at this moment,” he said. “(Manchester) City may be coming there. I don’t think other teams could catch them because they are going to drop points as well.
“The big games are yet to come. The difficult period is yet to come, so for all the teams, because they are all still in the Champions League and fighting on.”
However, the three-time Premier League winner with Arsenal stressed that mentality could prove decisive in the run-in.
“The only thing I would say is (about) the intensity of the first few months and the excitement. It looks sometimes now like ‘let’s not make a mistake’.
“And in football, if you are at the top, if you want to be a champion, you can’t rely on (that mentality of) ‘let’s not make a mistake’.”
