Thomas Tuchel has expressed uncertainty over the availability of Jude Bellingham for England’s friendlies next month, as they continue their preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
The Three Lions face Uruguay and Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium on March 27 and 31 respectively, but could be without one of their star players for the two games.
Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury earlier this month during a La Liga game against Rayo Vallecano, lasting only 10 minutes before he was forced off.
Tuchel, who became England head coach last year and signed a contract extension until 2028 earlier in the week, will assess the squad during the friendly games, before naming his provisional squad for the tournament.
“The club [Real Madrid] is a bit more defensive on the outlook regarding the weeks of his recovery,” Tuchel said.
“Jude is pushing, and as we know him, he is determined and super professional.
“He will try everything to be with us in March. Of course we are in contact, that is a normal thing to do, and we wish him all the best… Whatever we can do for him, we will help and support him. It is a little race against time”, the England coach added.
Bellingham has faced competition for his spot in the national team since the arrival of Tuchel, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers usually getting the nod in the attacking midfield role.
The 22-year-old last played for England in November, but is facing a battle to be fit in time for next month preparatory games.
“Personally, I am optimistic [about Bellingham’s fitness], But I am not sure”, Tuchel concluded.
England will also face New Zealand and Costa Rica in June, before their World Cup opener against Croatia in Dallas on June 17.
