Lauren James was left smiling after a powerful all-round display helped Chelsea Women battle their way to a hard-earned victory over Liverpool Women, with the forward underlining her growing confidence after injury.
On a wet and demanding night at Kingsmeadow, James was the driving force behind Chelsea’s attacking threat.
She first provided the breakthrough with a perfectly delivered cross from the left that was turned home by Sjoeke Nusken, before later producing a moment of magic herself, rifling in a stunning goal midway through the second half.
The performance was not just about end product. James carried the ball with purpose, stretched Liverpool’s back line and repeatedly shifted the momentum in Chelsea’s favour as the contest opened up after a tense start.
“I was really happy to assist Sio’s goal and get on the scoresheet,” said James.
“Most importantly, we got the three points. It was hard to break them down at the start, but thankfully we got the first goal and it started to open up from there.”
Equally significant was the fact James completed the full 90 minutes for the first time this season, a major step forward after an injury-hit campaign.
Her sharpness, movement and confidence suggested she is edging closer to peak condition just as Chelsea move into the decisive phase of the campaign.
“I felt good today. It’s hard coming back from injury. I’m trying to get my form back and find my rhythm again. It takes time but I’m glad I got on the scoresheet today.
“I’m trying not to let the outside noise affect me. I know what I’m capable of and I know what the team is capable of.”
As Chelsea continue to chase success on multiple fronts, James’ display felt like a timely reminder of her influence. With goals, assists and belief returning, the Blues look set to benefit from her resurgence when it matters most.
