FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick cut a frustrated but determined figure after Monday night’s 2–1 Liga defeat away to Girona, admitting his side are currently falling short of their usual level.
Speaking after the setback, Flick was clear where the focus lay and dismissed any outside distractions.
“I don’t want to talk about the referee. Everyone saw the match,” he said firmly.
“We defended very poorly, especially in transition. We weren’t well positioned and struggled to withstand Girona’s attacks … We needed more control and fewer mistakes. In the first half we had more chances, but we have to show the hunger to win these matches.”
Coming on the back of a recent defeat to Atletico Madrid, the loss carried extra weight in the dressing room.
“After losing to Atletico it was important to win today, and everyone is disappointed,” Flick admitted.
Despite the disappointment, the German coach struck a defiant tone, insisting the response must come on the training pitch and in future performances.
“We’re not doing well. We’re not in a good moment. Now we have a week to work, and that’s what we’ll do. We’ll fight to come back in the coming weeks with a different mentality and a higher level. Train and play.
“We didn’t play well. I don’t want excuses. We have to play better.”
